Η μαύρη τελεία (black spot ή black dot), αναφέρθηκε για 1η φορά την δεκαετία του 90. Το μυκόπλασμα και η ατοξοπλάσμωση είχαν «ενοχοποιηθεί» αρχικά. Σήμερα οι περισσότεροι επιστήμονες συμφωνούν ότι ο κυκλοϊός (Circovirus) είναι ο κύριος αιτιολογικός παράγοντας.
Ο κυκλοϊός είναι ο μικρότερος γνωστός ιός DNA. Μπορεί να προσβάλει πολλά είδη πτηνών όπως περιστέρια, παπαγάλους, καναρίνια, finches κ.ά. και είναι συγκεκριμένος για τον ξενιστή. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι ο κυκλοϊός των καναρινιών, δεν μπορεί να μολύνει παπαγάλους, περιστέρια και αντίστροφα. Ο ιός μπορεί να παραμείνει προσκολλημένος στην σκόνη, για μήνες ή και χρόνια στο περιβάλλον του εκτροφείου.
Για τους εκτροφείς πτηνών συντροφιάς και ιδιαίτερα των καναρινιών, ο κυκλοϊός είναι σημαντικός επειδή μπορεί να προκαλέσει στους νεοσσούς θνησιμότητα από 90 έως 100%!
Ο κυριότερος τρόπος μετάδοσης του ιού, είναι κυρίως από πτηνό σε πτηνό, από τη μητέρα στο αυγό, καθώς και από το στόμα από μολυσμένη τροφή, σκόνη φτερών κτλ.
Εάν ένα πτηνό μολυνθεί από τον ιό, χρειάζονται μερικές εβδομάδες για να δημιουργηθούν προστατευτικά αντισώματα. Αν μια κανάρα μολυνθεί κατά την γέννηση των αυγών, ο ιός θα μεταφερθεί στα αυγά χωρίς προστατευτικά αντισώματα. Ο κυκλοϊός θα αναπαραχθεί μέσα στα αυγά και θα καταστρέψει το ήδη ασθενές ανοσοποιητικό σύστημα των εμβρύων. Οποιαδήποτε δευτερογενής μόλυνση θα έχει δυσμενή κατάληξη για αυτά τα έμβρυα. Αυτός είναι ο κύριος λόγος που η μαύρη τελεία παρατηρείται πιο συχνά στα πρώτα αυγά μιας αναπαραγωγής χρονιάς. Καθώς προχωρά η περίοδος της αναπαραγωγής, οι κανάρες θα αναπτύξουν περισσότερα προστατευτικά αντισώματα, τα οποία θα μπορούν να περάσουν στα αυγά τους. Σύμφωνα με τον Rob Marshall (DVM), η μαύρη τελεία εμφανίζεται συχνότερα σε φωλιές με πρωτάρες θηλυκιές, υποστηρίζοντας την υπόθεση ότι τα αντισώματα παράγονται (χτίζονται) με την ηλικία των πτηνών. Επίσης έχει παρατηρηθεί μειωμένη ικανότητα απορρόφησης και χρήσης του υλικού του λεκιθικού σάκου σε νεοσσούς μαύρης τελείας (Dr. Coutteel). Με τον τρόπο αυτό ο νεοσσός δεν μπορεί να χρησιμοποιήσει τα προστατευτικά αντισώματα από τον λεκιθικό σάκο.
Ο κυκλοϊός, είναι η συνήθης αιτία νεκρών εμβρύων καναρινιών μέσα στο αβγό, με πράσινο - μαύρο χρώμα, πορτοκαλί υγρά και έντονη μυρωδιά. Σε εκκολαπτόμενους νεοσσούς μεταξύ ενός και πέντε ημερών, ο ιός παράγει μια μαύρη τελεία που είναι ορατή στη δεξιά πλευρά της κοιλιάς και οφείλεται σε αύξηση του όγκου της χολής και συχνά αποτελεί δείκτη βακτηριακής λοίμωξης. Μεταξύ των πιο συνηθισμένων δευτερογενών λοιμώξεων είναι η κολιβακίλωση (Escherichia coli). Οι μολυσμένοι νεοσσοί είναι αδύναμοι και δεν μπορούν να δεχτούν τροφή από τους γονείς τους και τελικά πεθαίνουν στις τρεις με τέσσερις ημέρες. Αυτή η μορφή της μαύρης τελείας είναι δύσκολο να θεραπευτεί. Τα κύρια συμπτώματα είναι απίσχανση, ανορεξία, λήθαργος και φλεγμονή του εντέρου. Το έντερο δεν μπορεί να χωνέψει και να αφομοιώσει τα θρεπτικά συστατικά και αυτό οδηγεί σε διάρροια, αφυδάτωση, απώλεια βάρους και θάνατο.
Η θεραπευτική παρέμβαση θα πρέπει να είναι γρήγορη, αλλιώς οι περισσότεροι νεοσσοί δεν θα καταφέρουν να επιβιώσουν. Μικροβιολογικές εξετάσεις για την αναζήτηση του υπεύθυνου μικροβίου και αντιβιόγραμμα θα πρέπει να διεξαχθεί για την υπόδειξη του καλύτερου αντιβιοτικού για την εξάλειψη των βακτηρίων.
Επειδή η φλεγμονή των εντέρων προκαλεί μειωμένη αφομοίωση των θρεπτικών συστατικών, είναι πολύ χρήσιμη η χορήγηση μιας διατροφικής φόρμουλας που παρέχει εύκολα αφομοιώσιμα θρεπτικά συστατικά όπως αμινοξέα, βιταμίνες και μονοσακχαρίτες για γρήγορη ενέργεια και τόνωση του οργανισμού.
Στα περιστέρια, η κλινική εικόνα της ασθένειας είναι λίγο διαφορετική. Τα περιστέρια επηρεάζονται μεταξύ 1 μηνός και 1 έτους, αλλά συνήθως στους νεοσσούς δεν παρουσιάζονται προβλήματα (Woods et all, 2000). Οι παπαγάλοι επηρεάζονται από τον κυκλοιό μεταξύ 2 μηνών και 3 ετών. Όσο νεότερα είναι τα πτηνά που μολύνονται, τόσο πιο θανατηφόρα είναι η κλινική πορεία (Miesle J., 2017).
Ο εντοπισμός και η απομάκρυνση των ευπαθών πτηνών είναι σημαντικός παράγοντας για την πρόληψη της ασθένειας. Επειδή οι λοιμώξεις από κυκλοϊό, συσχετίζονται συνήθως με την ανοσολογική ανεπάρκεια, η ενίσχυση του ανοσοποιητικού συστήματος κατά την προετοιμασία της αναπαραγωγής, την επώαση και τις πρώτες ημέρες της ζωής των νεοσσών βοηθάει σημαντικά στην πρόληψη της ασθένειας.
